About The Good Shepherd
We raise a rare breed of sheep—Karakuls on our farm in Myerstown.
Many of the American Karakuls have retained the characteristics of their Bokhara desert ancestors--fleetness of foot, hardiness, and the ability to survive. Karakuls are fur sheep and are probably the oldest of our present day breeds of sheep. Below is a January lamb—Nelly. Persian coats are made from the newborn lambs because their coats are very curly.
Karakuls have fat tails that they use to store energy for the lean times in the desert. The dominant color is black, but Dave and I raise the reds and have a rare moorit ewe who is Nelly’s mom. We use the wool to make hand woven rugs. Karakul wool is also know for making tents which makes it a great felting wool.
